What it does
Mechanism
MC1R activation
Melanotan II binds the melanocortin-1 receptor on melanocytes, activating cAMP signalling and tyrosinase — the melanin-making enzyme.
Eumelanin shift
Production shifts toward eumelanin, the photoprotective brown-black pigment, rather than the red-yellow form.
Less UV
With melanin primed, less UV exposure is needed to reach a visible tan.
The Evidence
These findings describe peer-reviewed research on Melanotan II — the active(s) in Peak Sun. Claims are about the compound, not our formulation.
Dorr et al. · Archives of Dermatology 2004
Across Phase 1 trials, subjects needed ~50% less UV for equivalent tanning, with fewer UV-induced sunburn cells.
PMID 15262693 (melanotan I; shared MC1R mechanism).
Dorr et al. · Life Sciences 1996
The original Phase 1 pilot of Melanotan II itself demonstrated tanning across multiple body sites.
PMID 8637402 — the only human data for MT-II specifically.
Human data is early-stage (small Phase 1). Melanotan II is NOT TGA-approved and is supplied for research use. Not a sun-protection product — use normal sun safety.
